What is moon milk?

The old story:
Moon milk has been around for centuries and has its roots in Ayurveda, a medical tradition that originated in India. The ancient moon milk was served warm with spices, oils and adaptogenic herbs such as turmeric or ashwagandha and had healing effects.

The new story:
Modern Moon Milk is a warm nightcap made with milk (alternatives), a hint of sweetness, and soothing ingredients like lavender. It combines old knowledge with new inspiration as well as seasonal ingredients and “superfoods” from different cultures and countries. Anyone who normally takes sleeping pills can find moon milk as a delicious alternative.

Benefits of lavender milk for sleep
Lavender moon milk can:
  • Relax
  • Promote sleep
  • Calm your nerves
  • Lift the mood
  • Stimulate digestion
  • Reduce fear
  • Give magical dreams
Lavender: Edible lavender is the key ingredient in this homemade moon milk. Lavender contains substances that calm the mind and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

Chamomile: The recipe contains dried chamomile flowers. Chamomile tea is an ancient folk remedy, and studies have shown that the herb actually helps you relax and fall asleep faster.

Vanilla: Vanilla has a slightly calming effect, and the sweet vanilla aroma relieves anxiety and promotes deep sleep.

Ashwagandha powder (optional): Ashwagandha root is a popular Ayurvedic herb. The powder is said to reduce stress and strengthen the immune system.

Ingredients:
  • 250ml almond milk or oat milk
  • 1 tsp cashew/coconut
  • 1/2 tsp lavender powder/ 1 tsp dried lavender flowers (culinary lavender, sprayed!)
  • 1 tsp chamomile
  • 1/2 tsp Ashwaghanda powder (optional)
  • A pinch of vanilla/cardamom
  • pinch of pepper
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp sweetener (honey/maple syrup/agave syrup)
  • 1/2 tsp butterfly pea flower tea (powder) / blue spirulina (for the color and the magical touch)
Preparation: (10min)

1. Mix: Add milk, lavender, chamomile, ashwagandha powder, vanilla, and food coloring (if using) to a small saucepan and whisk together.
2. Pour: Heat on the stove over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes to give the ingredients time to infuse in the milk. A gentle simmer with a little steam is best. Reduce the heat when the lavender milk starts to boil.
3. Strain: Remove the lavender milk from the heat and strain through a fine-mesh tea strainer into a cup or mug.
4. Sweeten and serve warm before bed.

Enjoy!
