Brief description:
Hand-dyed T-shirt using the stain-dye process with lac dye extract and soda; the color formation occurs through local contact reactions on pre-mordanted cotton.

Technical description:
Materials & Preparation
- Fiber: 100% combed ring-spun organic cotton – 155.0 GSM
- Pre-mordanting: Aluminum triformate (cold mordant) to prepare the fiber for vegetable dyes

- Colorant: Lac Dye Extract
- Additive: Soda to activate the dye solution
Process parameters
- Method: Stain-Dye (local application or flat storage in dye solution without full immersion)
- Contact time: several hours to one day of wetting, depending on the area of application.
- Cure Phase: Resting phase to stabilize the dye binding before the final rinse
- Oxidation: natural color development through contact with air during and after the cure phase
- Final step: Rinse, then machine wash with mild detergent, followed by steam finishing and air drying.
Coloring page
- Pattern: irregularly distributed, cloudy formations
- Tonal values: pink to magenta gradations in varying intensity
- Structure: slight, localized pigment concentrations in more humid areas

Dyeing in small quantities
All T-shirts are dyed in small batches or individually. The dyes act directly on the fiber, making each piece a visible result of the respective dyeing process.

The dyeing process takes place at the Cosmaki natural dyeing studio in Cologne. Every step is done manually – from preparing the dye solution to the final washing and drying.
