Cosmaki DIY dye jar

DIY Dyeing Jar – Tips & Ideas

The dye jar is a simple experiment.
The textiles have already been pre-treated.
The colors are derived from plants – e.g., from extracts, bark, flowers, or peels.
You will receive clear basic steps and inspiration – no fixed design templates.

What you need

– the glass or refill

– dye

– a textile that has already been mordanted

– Water from the tap

The basic steps (for all fibers)
  1. Place the textile in the glass

  2. Sprinkle in dye (Be creative here!)

  3. Fill with tap water

  4. Leave the glass standing

  5. Finally, rinse and dry.

The differences lie in the water temperature and the standing time.

Cotton, linen, hemp

Water temperature: hot tap water (not boiling).

Standing time: from a few hours to several days, longer standing time = more intense color.

What is possible:

– Shake

– For a more even result, you can gently move the fabric in the glass, ideally with a spoon.

Rubber bands can be used to tie off areas and create simple patterns.

– Do not place on the radiator

– Natural variation is part of the process

When to take it out?

If the color in the glass looks nice, you can leave the fabric in there a little longer.

After washing and drying, the color becomes slightly lighter – a longer standing time ensures that the color remains vibrant.

Iron:

After drying, you can iron cotton, linen and hemp normally (it doesn't fix, but smooths).

Wool (e.g. socks, hats)

Wool is sensitive to heat and friction.

Water temperature: warm from the tap (lukewarm).

Standing time: usually 1–2 days.

Important:

– Do not shake

– Move gently only once the fiber is completely covered

– No heat, no friction

– Do not place on the radiator

When to take it out?

With wool, you can also choose based on appearance, but only within the recommended standing time (approx. 1-2 days).

The color becomes slightly lighter after drying.

Iron:

Please do not iron wool. Heat can damage the fibers.

What happens while standing

– natural transitions

– subtle irregularities

– individual color development depending on the textile, dye, and resting

This variation is part of the project.

After dyeing

– Cotton: washable at 30 °C

– Wool: hand wash in cold/lukewarm water

– Slight lightening after the first wash is normal

What you get from us

– natural plant dyes

– a pre-treated textile (optional in the set)

– a glass or refill
