Hand-dyed bath mat made from discarded hotel mats, dyed with lac dye and soda . The color develops in a multi-stage process with resting phases, during which the warm, organic hue naturally intensifies.

Dyed on October 9, 2025 at the Cosmaki natural dyeing studio, Cologne.

Robust, heavy hotel quality. Ideal for the bathroom, guest room or as an accent in the living area.
Each mat is unique – with the characteristic, slightly cloudy tone gradient of Lac Dye.

Technical description

Materials & Preparation

• Fiber: 100% cotton (high-pile hotel quality)

• Textile origin: discarded bath mats from Cologne laundries

• Pre-wash: Deep cleaning to remove detergent residue

• Pre-mordanting: Aluminum triformate to optimize dye uptake

• Modifier: Soda for pH shift and tone intensification

• Color character: strong rosé-mauve tones with a cloudy gradient

Process parameters

• Method: Stain-dye in open vats (no movement dyeing)

• Contact time: several days with varying wetting

• Cure Phase: Resting and oxidation phase for stable color development

• Final steps: Rinse, machine wash, air dry

• Pattern: irregular formations, typical for stain dye

• Tone values: pink, mauve, darker edges due to prolonged moisture

• Structure: the pile creates a soft, almost “pixelated” color depth
